Big Finish is almost certainly best known for their Doctor Who output, which has now stretched across nearly two decades now. yet the company has proven just as adept at taking other properties and bringing them back to life for fans ranging from Blake's 7 to The Prisoner. They've also managed to cross the Atlantic as well bringing back to life Dark Shadows, the gothic soap-opera centered around the Collins family in a Maine town that celebrated its fiftieth anniversary earlier this year. Like Doctor Who three years ago, they celebrated the occasion with a special release featuring cast members from across its TV and audio runs. The result was Blood & Fire.I must confess at this point that most of how I've experienced Dark Shadows comes from Big Finish's output. I've seen episodes of the TV series of course and I read Lara Parker's novel Angelique's Descent a couple of years ago. Yet, perhaps because I was already attuned to Big Finish's output via Doctor Who, I found the series most accessible there. Big Finish has tried to keep their Dark Shadows audios accessible to those who haven't seen much (or indeed any) of the TVs series. Blood & Fire, despite being a celebratory release, continues in that tradition as well from its opening minutes when Parker's witch Angélique is sent back to 1762 by her dark lord with only goal: to destroy the Collin's family.
Dark Shadows was a soap-opera with gothic and horror overtones (it featured vampires, werewolves, witches, time travel, and parallel universes to name but a few things) which Blood & Fire which is all captured nicely here. Roy Gill's script lands Angélique at an important moment in the history of the Collins family which reveals the family in all of its shame & glory as a wedding is soon to take place and one generation prepares to hand over to another. There's all kinds of drama and skullduggery going on in which few are truly what they appear to be. The supernatural elements of the series loom large over this release as well from witchcraft to zombies, all of which give fans new and old a sense of what this series is all about.
The performances are solid as well across the entirety of the large cast. Leading it is Parker in the role of Angélique and Joanna Going as Laura Stockbridge with Blood & Fire playing out largely as a battle of both magic and wits between the two of them, something that both of them are more than up to playing. Going in particular just about steals the entire show as her character comes front and center and her fate becomes intertwined with that of the Collins family. The entire cast is solid truth be told and I could spend paragraphs listing everyone but standouts include Kathryn Leigh Scott, the ever reliable David Selby (who comes at the start of the second half), Andrew Collins as Joshua Collins, and James Storm. While performances tend to vary towards the melodramatic at times, it's all in keeping with both the story and the series as a whole and so many familiar voices will likely make longtime fans very happy indeed.
While I freely admit to not having a huge amount of Dark Shadows experience, I feel safe in saying that of everything I've experienced no single story that sums up the series as well as this story does. Simply put, it captures everything the series is about: family dynamics, the supernatural, and the corruption that comes with wealth and power. Blood & Fire is a celebration of the elements that has made Dark Shadows a success across five decades and, if Big Finish's output is anything to go by, it's got plenty of life left in it still.

Dark Shadows Blood Fire Roy Gill 9781785753305 Books Reviews
OK, can we all agree on one thing? Roy Gill is an absolute genius. With "Blood and Fire," he's written the perfect 50th anniversary celebration of "Dark Shadows" -- a tale so true to the original spirit of the series, but so new and delightful, that it's a thrill to behold. It's everything a DS fan, new or old, could hope for, and everything that the late and lamented recent big screen version failed to achieve. This guy is a keeper, and I hope he continues churning out new DS episodes for years to come.
I'm writing this after my second listen to "B&F." I was simply too overwhelmed by it after the first turn to express my thoughts. But tonight I am even more impressed by the audio's complexity, its attention to DS lore, and -- yes -- its utter sense of fun and invention. It's an instant new addition to the DS cannon.
Of course Roy didn't do it alone. Producers David Darlington and Joe Lidster, and directors Ursula Burton, Darlington and Lidster deserve kudos as well. Without their efforts this range may have died a lonely death. The entire Big Finish team has preserved and progressed a beloved franchise, and its fans are so grateful for their work.
The cast, once again, delivers outstanding characterizations. Everybody was grand. That said, I was particularly impressed by Daisy Torme as Abigail, James Storm as Abraham (note to BF Can you cast Jim in a leading role he deserves, instead of a cameo in which he's quickly dispatched? He is too good to waste!), Andrew Collins as Joshua, and Nancy Barrett as Isobel. Lara Parker gives us a bravura performance as Angelique; her work is consistently excellent, but she's superlative in "B&F." And what can I say about Joanna Going? I loved her as Vicki in the 1991 remake. But here, as Laura, she creates a truly original character who gains in strength and power as the story goes on -- and blows us away by the tale's end. She is a most welcome addition to the BF company of actors, and I hope to see (hear) more of her in the future.
Then there's Jerry Lacy. Can that man ever do anything wrong? As an actor, he never makes a bad choice. He is a true star of this range. Now I want a Malachi Sands origin story. Who was this guy? How did he harness the power of the Phoenix? And why did he pick Laura for the curse? I know I am getting selfish, but I can dream.
I'm getting long-winded so I'll wrap this up. The plot was a treat. I was astounded by the audacity of the march of the dead on Collins House and the fiery conclusion of the tale. Laura as savior of the Collins family? Incredible. The inclusion of so many original and BF DS actors was seemless, even in tiny roles (More Chris Pennock and Lisa Richards! Please!). Using Bob Cobert's score in so many places made it seem even more like a return to the original series.
"B&F" knocked it out of the park. I can't wait to listen to it again. But first I must hear "Echoes of the Past." What a great 50th anniversary celebration you are giving us, BF; and I can't believe we are getting even more. "Bloodline," anyone?
Wonderful Dark Shadows adaptation.
Nice to hear these actors on a new story. I enjoyed it very much.
